Purim, Comic Relief and Other Celebrations
Once again we had a packed Synagogue for the Woodford Purim Spiel – the real story of Purim – with many of those attending wearing either Purim fancy dress or Comic Relief regalia. Narrated by the ‘Purim Fairy’ (head teacher Josh Newham) with members of staff helping to tell the story; the Spiel featured some of the Cheder children – sporting some splendid hats and wigs – in key roles.
Rabbi Spock, International Women’s Day, Jack Petchey Award and Lots of Cake!
This year Purim coincided with the return of Rabbi Richard Jacobi from his recent sabbatical. Rabbi Jacobi took inspiration from the late Leonard Nimoy for his costume, so it was that a splendid Rabbi Spock led the service. There was time within the service to discuss the meaning and relevance of International Women’s Day and at the end of the service to make a Jack Petchey award to Eli Klein.
The morning ended with everyone sampling some delicious cakes made by members of the congregation as part of the great Comic Relief Bake-Off . Thankfully, we did not have to judge the cakes as they were all worth winners. It was a delicious way to raise £123 for Comic Relief and bring the day’s events to a close.
